Terra appoints Huey to head its legal affairs department John W. Huey has been appointed Vice President, General Counsel, and Corporate Secretary of Terra Industries, Inc., and will now handle all of the company's legal operations. Huey will serve as the company's leading legal and compliance officer, and he will oversee both national and international legal matters. Huey comes from Kansas City-based Shughart, Thomson & Kilroy, PC, where he served as Of Counsel. For a major portion of his career, Huey served Butler Manufacturing Company in Kansas City, where he rose to the position of Vice President, General Counsel, and Corporate Secretary. Terra Industries is a major producer and marketer of nitrogen fertilizers, crop protection products, and seeds. Affymax names new VP of legal affairs and corporate counsel Affymax, Inc., has named Grace U. Shin Vice President of Legal Affairs and Corporate Counsel. Shin brings 15 years of legal experience to the company, with her most recent post being that of Vice President of Legal Affairs and Corporate Counsel at FibroGen, a biotechnology company. She is experienced in negotiating licenses and partnership agreements with other biotechnology companies and has also worked on equity financings and corporate governance issues. A clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company, Affymax develops drugs to combat life-threatening illnesses such as cancer and kidney disease. Illinois Tool Works revamps top management, appoints senior VP and GC As part of the company's overall revamping strategy for its top management, Illinois Tool Works (ITW), Inc., has promoted James H. Wooten, Jr., to Senior Vice President, General Counsel, and Corporate Secretary. Wooten was named Vice President and General Counsel in August of 2005. Having served as Associate General Counsel for ITW for the past 17 years, he has significant expertise to handle the position. Prior to this appointment, Wooten worked at Gardner, Carton & Douglas in Chicago. Illinois Tool Works, Inc., designs and produces an array of highly engineered fasteners and components, equipment and consumable systems, and specialty products and equipment for customers around the world. Genesee & Wyoming names new GC Connecticut-based Genesee & Wyoming, Inc., has appointed Allison M. Fergus General Counsel and Secretary. As part of her responsibilities, Fergus will be handling all legal activities for the company and its subsidiaries, while reporting to its Chairman and CEO. Since November 2005, Fergus has served as Special Counsel, and prior to taking this position, she was an associate at Shearman & Sterling, LLP, in New York. Genesee & Wyoming, Inc., intends to gain leverage from Fergus' significant experience with public company reporting and securities laws. The company operates short-line and regional freight railroads in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, and Bolivia. Salary hike for Merck GC Pharmaceutical major Merck & Co. has announced a 13-percent salary increase for its General Counsel, Kenneth C. Frazier. The legal head's salary will now be $780,000 annually instead of $689,400, and he has been elevated from Senior Vice President to Executive Vice President. Frazier has been instrumental in steering the company through approximately 21,000 lawsuits filed against it by consumers of its Vioxx painkiller, which allegedly caused heart attacks. The drug had to be removed from pharmacy shelves in 2004. The announcement of Frazier's salary increase came with a filing made by the company with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission commending Frazier for his leadership skills and his significant contributions to the company. ATM giant announces new GC WRG Services, Inc., has named Ray Varcho as its new General Counsel. Varcho will oversee the company's legal issues, including contracts, corporate governance, real estate, intellectual property, employment, and litigation matters. He will also manage ATM-related legal matters. Varcho previously served as General Counsel of National Auto Credit, Inc., a consumer-finance company. WRG provides ATM solutions—from hardware to processing systems—and has contracts with 6,100 terminals across the United States. |
