Massey Energy Hires GC Coal company Massey Energy Co. has promoted M. Shane Harvey to general counsel. Harvey has served as vice president and assistant general counsel at Massey since November 2006. He will continue his responsibilities, overseeing all legal activity, including environmental compliance, health and safety compliance, and federal and state regulatory issues. He received his J.D. from West Virginia University School of Law. Scotts Miracle-Gro Promotes Brockman Consumer lawn and garden company Scotts Miracle-Gro has promoted Vincent C. Brockman to executive vice president, general counsel, and corporate secretary. Brockman's involvement in the company started as far back as 2002, when he joined its legal group as assistant general counsel. In 2004 he became its chief ethics and compliance officer; in 2006 he was appointed chief administrative officer; and in 2007 he became senior vice president. His current responsibilities will include leading the company's legal, ethics, and compliance activities. "Vince's in-depth legal knowledge and expertise, coupled with his counsel and guidance on key corporate issues, have been invaluable to the organization," said Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Jim Hagedorn. "With his proven record of leadership, I know we will be well served through his expanded responsibilities." Brockman received his bachelor's degree from Miami University and his J.D. from the Ohio State University. Ameron Hires New GC Ameron International Corp. has hired Javier Solis as its new executive vice president of administration, secretary, and general counsel. Solis reported on February 1 to Chairman and Chief Executive Officer James Marlen. Previously, Solis was a mechanical engineer and assistant general counsel at Western Gear. "Javier Solis has provided valuable advice and counsel to the company for a number of years. His contributions have been significant. In his expanded role, Mr. Solis will participate more broadly in the development of the strategic direction of the company," said Marlen. Solis received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Loyola Marymount University and his J.D. from Loyola Law School. University of Michigan Hires New GC The University of Michigan has hired Suellyn Scarnecchia as its new vice president and general counsel. Previously, Scarnecchia was the first woman dean at the University of New Mexico School of Law and associate dean at the University of Michigan Law School. "Collaboration with terrific colleagues and students in New Mexico has only strengthened my desire to dedicate my energies to the many fascinating issues facing higher education. I look forward to the new challenges of this position and to returning home to Ann Arbor," writes Scarnecchia in a statement regarding her appointment. JPMorgan Hires New GC For the first time, JPMorgan has hired a general counsel for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa: Karen Linney. Linney, who joined the company in 1993, will be responsible for heading up a team, aiding the chief compliance officer, and managing the bank's relations. She will report to Diane Genova and Travis Epes, New York co-general counsel, and Jakob Stott, EMEA chief operating officer. "Karen's appointment is a reflection both of our growth in the region and of the ever-growing importance of the legal function to the bank," said a spokesperson. |
